Detective Conan (Japanese: 名探偵コナン, Meitantei Konan, 'Great Detective Conan'), is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama. Beginning in early 1994, tt has been serialized in Shogakukan’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday, and it chapters have been collected in 106 volumes as of October 2024 and counting.
Due to legal problems with the name Detective Conan, the English language releases were renamed “Case Closed.” The story follows the high school detective Shinichi Kudo, whose body was transformed into that of an elementary school-age child while investigating a mysterious organization. Generally, he solves a multitude of cases by impersonating his childhood best friend's father and various other characters.
Jimmy Kudo (Japanese name: Shinichi Kudo) – aka Detective Conan – is a high school detective who works with police to solve cases. During an investigation, he is ambushed and incapacitated by a member of a crime syndicate known as the Black Organization. In an attempt to murder the young detective, they force-feed him a dangerous experimental drug. However, instead of killing him, it shrinks his body to the size of an elementary school child. Adopting the pseudonym Conan Edogawa and keeping his true identity a secret, Kudo lives with his childhood friend Rachel Moore (Ran Mori) and her father, Richard (Kogoro Mori), who is a private detective.
While he continues to dig deeper into the Black Organization, he frequently interacts with other characters, including his neighbor, Dr. Agasa; Ran's friend Serena Sebastian (Sonoko Suzuki); a fellow teenage detective, Harley Hartwell (Heiji Hattori); assorted police detectives from different regions; and a phantom thief called Kaito Kid. During a rare encounter with the Black Organization, Conan helps the FBI plant a CIA agent, Kir, inside the Black Organization as a spy.
In January 1996, the Detective Conan manga was adapted into an anime television series, which premiered in January 1996 – the anime series was licensed for North American broadcast in 2003 under the name Case Closed with the characters given Americanized names. Eventually, a series of Detective Conan films - and even video games - followed, to great popularity.
The collected Detective Conan trade paperback mangas had over 270 million copies in circulation worldwide by January 2023, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. In 2001, the manga was awarded the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category. The anime adaptation was likewise well received – in Japanese anime television rankings, Case Closed episodes ranked in the top six weekly. Both the manga and the anime have had a positive response from critics for their plot and cases. The manga has been sold in 25 countries, while the anime has been broadcast in 40 countries.
On to the watch itself - Seiko introduced its 7Nxx movement in circa 1993, and it came in a range of styles and dial colors, to include the Detective Conan collab here - Seiko would cease production of the calibre in 2009.
1969 was one of the most spectacular in Seiko’s storied history. That year, it released the world’s first automatic chronograph, the Calibre 6139 and the V.F.A. (Very Fine Adjusted) movement – which delivered Seiko’s highest yet level of precision for a mechanical movement.
Seiko would release another first upon the world, the first quartz wristwatch - the Seiko Quartz Astron, which went on to change the way the world told time, and severely tested the dominance of the Swiss, bringing high technology within the reach of all. The Swiss would literally pay for neglecting the evolution of the watch, in terms of market share and profit.
As the world got accustomed to the novel new Astron technology dominating the market in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Seiko was hard at work on its next innovation to challenge Swiss watch industry dominance, developing the Superior, Grand Quartz, King Quartz - and eventually the 7Nxx line here.
