Much like Seiko, the petroleum industry has been around for over a century - except Seiko is even older than the modern oil industry. So perhaps it's only to be expected Seiko and one of the original so-called "Seven Sisters" of the oil industry would team up eventually - like with this gold 1995 Seiko "Shell Oil" 7N43-9080 dress watch, with original Seiko 7N01 instructions manual.
British petroleum industry giant Shell is a multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, England. A public limited company with a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) and secondary listings on Euronext Amsterdam and the New York Stock Exchange, the huge company is a core component of Big Oil. Shell is the second largest investor-owned oil and gas company in the world by revenue (after ExxonMobil), and among the world's largest companies out of any industry.
Shell was formed in April 1907 through the merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum Company of the Netherlands and The "Shell" Transport and Trading Company of the United Kingdom. The combined company rapidly became the leading competitor of the American Standard Oil and by 1920 Shell was the largest producer of oil in the world.
Shell first entered the chemicals industry in 1929 and would become one of the "Seven Sisters" (companies that owned nearly all rights to the oil in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the Persian Gulf), which dominated the global petroleum industry from the mid-1940s to the mid-1970s.
As a vertically integrated company, it is active in every area of the oil and gas industry, including exploration, production, refining, transport, distribution and marketing, petrochemicals, power generation, and trading. Shell USA, its principal subsidiary in the United States, is one of its largest businesses. In addition to the main Shell brand, the company also owns the Jiffy Lube, Pennzoil and Quaker State brands.
With operations in over 70 countries, Shell produces around 3.7 million barrels of oil equivalent per day and has around 44,000 service stations worldwide, with nearly $317 billion in revenue, proven reserves of 11.1 billion barrels, and 103,000 employees as of 2023. Measured by both its own emissions, and the emissions of all the fossil fuels it sells, Shell was the ninth-largest corporate producer of greenhouse gas emissions in the period 1988–2015.
Now on to the gold Seiko itself - introduced its 7Nxx movement in circa 1993, the Seiko caliber came in a range of styles and dial colors, to include the gold one here - Seiko would cease production of the calibre in 2009.
1969 was one of the most spectacular in Seiko’s storied history. That year, it released the world’s first automatic chronograph, the Calibre 6139 and the V.F.A. (Very Fine Adjusted) movement – which delivered Seiko’s highest yet level of precision for a mechanical movement.
Seiko would release another first upon the world, the first quartz wristwatch - the Seiko Quartz Astron, which went on to change the way the world told time, and severely tested the dominance of the Swiss, bringing high technology within the reach of all. The Swiss would literally pay for neglecting the evolution of the watch, in terms of market share and profit.
As the world got accustomed to the novel new Astron technology dominating the market in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Seiko was hard at work on its next innovation to challenge Swiss watch industry dominance, developing the Superior, Grand Quartz, King Quartz - and eventually the 7Nxx line here.
