Seiko has made a wide variety of weird and wonderful watches within some of their sub-brands, and this 1997 Cabane de Zucca x Seiko 7N43-0BD0 here - on its original stainless-steel bracelet, and with an original Seiko 7N43 instructions manual - falls neatly into both of those categories.
Cabane de Zucca, often referred to as Zucca, was founded in 1988 - with its first collections launched in 1989 - in Tokyo by designer Akira Onozuka. Having previously worked with Misake Design Studios under Issey Misake, Onozuka quickly had a following.
Additional brands were launched by Zucca in 1992 with Hakui and in 1994 with Zucca Travail, both designed to provide work wear and uniforms for professionals. The Cabane series of Zucca wristwatches - like the one here, with Seiko - was launched in 1996. The Zucca Design Office was incorporated in 2003 to combine all aspects of the company’s design process, allowing Zucca to become well known throughout the design and fashion industries.
Onozuka’s designs, often seen as an expression of his artistic experimentation seek to combine multiple seemingly different factors into each product, with functionality only one goal of many, while seeking out inspiration in everything from literature and art to travel and his family. The majority of fashions developed by Onozuka have been simple casual wear that has been made to look edgier for a fashion conscious consumer base, creating an eager, loyal group of customers.
In the contemporary era, Zucca clothing can be found in a limited number of boutiques around the world, primarily in major fashion hubs such as Paris, London, and New York. The label has been expanding in recent years as the brand gains greater attention in worldwide circles.
Seiko introduced its 7N43 movement in circa 1993, and it came in a range of styles and dial colors, to include the deep blue silver one here - Seiko would cease production of the calibre in 2009.
1969 was one of the most spectacular in Seiko’s storied history. That year, it released the world’s first automatic chronograph, the Calibre 6139 and the V.F.A. (Very Fine Adjusted) movement – which delivered Seiko’s highest yet level of precision for a mechanical movement.
Seiko would release another first upon the world, the first quartz wristwatch - the Seiko Quartz Astron, which went on to change the way the world told time, and severely tested the dominance of the Swiss, bringing high technology within the reach of all. The Swiss would literally pay for neglecting the evolution of the watch, in terms of market share and profit.
As the world got accustomed to the novel new Astron technology dominating the market in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Seiko was hard at work on its next innovation to challenge Swiss watch industry dominance, developing the Superior, Grand Quartz, King Quartz - and eventually the 7N43 line here.
